Report: Chargers LT Rashawn Slater lands record extension
July 27 - Los Angeles Chargers left tackle Rashawn Slater has agreed to a record-setting four-year, $114 million extension, ESPN reported on Sunday. The deal includes a record $92 million guaranteed and makes Slater the highest-paid offensive lineman in history at $28.5 million per season, per the report. Tampa Bay Buccaneers left tackle Tristan Wirfs' contract has an average annual salary of $28.12 million and Detroit Lions right tackle Penei Sewell earns $28 million, according to Spotrac. The Chargers confirmed that they agreed to terms on a multi-year contract extension with the two-time Pro Bowl selection but did not provide any financial details. Slater, 26, was a first-round pick (13th overall) in the 2021 NFL Draft and is entering the final year of his rookie deal. His fifth-year club option is worth $19.04 million this season. Slater has started all 51 of his games for the Chargers, including 15 last season. He was limited to just three games in 2022 due to a ruptured biceps tendon. He made the Pro Bowl in 2021 and 2024 and was named Second Team All-Pro in 2021. --Field Level Media

Titans DT Jeffery Simmons ranks No. 4 in ESPN's position rankings list
Jeffery Simmons is sometimes a divisive topic among Tennessee Titans fans. The occasionally dominant defensive tackle has battled injuries, missing eight games across the previous three seasons. There's also the odd social media run-in, when he cussed out Buck Reising, or stayed away from voluntary OTAs this year, citing 'personal reasons.' At his best, Simmons is a game-changing defensive tackle. His league-wide reputation indicates such. Simmons has made three Pro Bowl appearances, including one this past season (originally as an alternate), despite recording just five sacks. ESPN is releasing their annual position rankings. On Tuesday, they dropped the defensive tackle iteration. Simmons clocked in at No. 4 overall, ahead of Quinnen Williams, DeForest Buckner, and Vita Vea, to name a few. 'Simmons has been a staple in the top 10 due to unique power that some evaluators consider the best in the league,' ESPN wrote. 'He has risen to as high as No. 2 on the list because of the problems he gives opposing guards and centers.' Simmons' lack of production was a topic of discussion among the anonymous coaches and executives that were polled. They decided to look past the pedestrian numbers, collectively still labeling him a top-five interior defender. 'Still dominant vs. the run — I didn't see the same pass-rush explosion,' an NFC executive said. 'Morale gets low and it's hard to rush when you're always playing from behind,' an NFL coordinator said. 'Still one of the most complete players.' Simmons' best stretch occurred in 2021-22 when he compiled 16 sacks. In the two seasons since, that number downgraded to 10.5 QB takedowns, with injuries playing a larger role. The Titans desperately need Simmons to be healthy and effective in 2025. Simmons is signed through the 2027 season, via a previously inked four-year extension worth $94 million. Simmons earns $23.5 million annually. The top defensive tackles now earn $30-plus million annually. He could want to discuss an amended contract if he bounces back this campaign. Browns OG Joel Bitonio falls just shy of ESPN's top 10 interior linemen
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler is unveiling the results of his annual survey ranking the top 10 players at each position in the eyes of NFL personnel. After defensive end Myles Garrett was ranked as the top pass-rusher in the NFL earlier this week, another Cleveland Browns stalwart has drawn praise from participants. While Browns guard Joel Bitonio didn't quite make Fowler's list of the top 10 interior offensive linemen in the NFL, he was one of five players to earn an honorable mention. 2025 marks the first time since Fowler began his survey in 2020 that Bitonio has not ranked within the top 10, but league personnel believe he is still playing at a high level. Here is what one AFC executive had to say about Bitonio: "Definitely slight decline as he ages, but still a really good player who grades out well. Still a very consistent player compared to the rest of the field, which is something I really value at an error prevention position." Bitonio is coming off a 2024 season that saw him earn his seventh straight Pro Bowl selection, and is heading into his 12th season overall with the Browns. Last month, he opened up about why he decided to return for the 2025 season after seriously contemplating retirement this offseason. While plenty of changes have come to Cleveland this offseason, Bitonio's play is one thing the Browns can count on staying consistent. Lions standout LT Taylor Decker dealing with shoulder issue
July 20 - Detroit Lions Pro Bowl left tackle Taylor Decker is recovering from shoulder surgery, coach Dan Campbell told reporters on Sunday. Campbell expects Decker, 31, to be on the field in early August. The Lions open the preseason against the Los Angeles Chargers in the Hall of Fame Game on July 31 in Canton, Ohio. "We feel like there's a good chance we can get (Decker) back after the Hall of Fame Game," Campbell said. "He's good. Just cleaned up his shoulder a little bit and we're going to work him back in when he's ready to go. He's in a good place." The Lions placed Decker on the active/physically unable to perform list on Thursday but didn't divulge a reason for the move. Decker has started all 126 games played for the team since joining the franchise in 2016. He played in 14 regular-season games and the playoff loss to the Washington Commanders last season while receiving his first Pro Bowl nod. --Field Level Media

Raiders' Maxx Crosby Climbs the Ladder in ESPN's Positional Rankings
Raiders' Maxx Crosby Climbs the Ladder in ESPN's Positional Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Las Vegas Raiders hit the jackpot during the 2019 NFL Draft when they selected Eastern Michigan edge rusher Maxx Crosby. They waited until the No. 106 overall pick in the fourth round to do so, but he has been a game changer for the Silver and Black. Advertisement Through six NFL seasons, he has compiled 59.5 sacks and 105 tackles for loss, as well as nine forced fumbles. He has led the league in tackles for loss on two occasions and been named to four Pro Bowls and two All-Pro Second-Teams. There is no definitive answer on where Crosby ranks compared to the NFL's other elite edge rushers, but the consensus is that he belongs somewhere in the top five. Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (15) and Las Vegas Raiders DE Maxx Crosby (98).Jay Biggerstaff-Imagn Images According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, who polled NFL executives, coaches and scouts, Crosby ranks at No. 4 in the league among all edge rushers. This is up from his ranking of No. 5 before last season. "Crosby is making waves in the pass-rush pantheon, vaulting one spot in each of the past three years," Fowler wrote. "Outdistancing Nick Bosa and stealing votes from Watt and Parsons is tough. Nearly half of Crosby's votes landed in the top three." Advertisement There has been an ongoing debate about who is better between Bosa and Crosby, as many felt that the Raiders star was robbed of the Defensive Player of the Year award that Bosa won in 2023. However, it appears that several NFL personnel members agree that he has surpassed Bosa, even though Crosby missed five games last season and had only 7.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss. "Relentless motor, skilled rusher and never wants to leave the game," an NFL coordinator said. "Keeps getting better and better." An AFC coach also sang Crosby's praises, specifically his work ethic and refusal to leave the game for even a snap. Advertisement "For him to play at that high a level with that volume is incredible," a high-ranking AFC personnel staff member said. Crosby trailed the Browns' Myles Garrett, the Steelers' T.J. Watt, and the Cowboys' Micah Parsons in this ranking. He barely edged out Bosa, the Bengals' Trey Hendrickson and the Lions' Aidan Hutchinson for the No. 4 spot.
